The Coordinator for Deaf Ministry, based at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Ijamsville, Maryland, is responsible for supporting a thriving Deaf Catholic community within the Archdiocese of Baltimore, primarily at St. Ignatius, while also evangelizing Deaf individuals who are not yet active members of the Church.
The Coordinator serves as the lay pastoral leader of the Deaf Catholic community in Ijamsville, inspiring parishioners to participate fully in parish life and fostering self-sustaining ministries, evangelization initiatives, and faith formation programs.
In addition, the Coordinator is responsible for providing American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation for the Deaf Ministry Chaplain during liturgies, sacramental celebrations, meetings, and other events. The Coordinator also assists with hearing-related disability accommodations throughout the Archdiocese of Baltimore and supports the efforts of the Office of Life, Justice, and Peace.
Essential Functions:
- Serve as the primary lay leader for Deaf Catholic Ministry at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Ijamsville, MD, and as a supportive leader for the Deaf community at St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church in Parkville, MD.
- Support the Chaplain for Deaf Ministry in planning and implementing pastoral, faith formation, and evangelization programs.
- Provide ASL interpretation for Masses, sacraments, pastoral visits, meetings, and events (approximately three Deaf-accessible Masses per month).
- Recruit, train, and coordinate ASL interpreters for parish and archdiocesan liturgies and events.
- Advocate for the accessibility and inclusion of Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals throughout the Archdiocese.
- Build and maintain relationships with parishes, archdiocesan offices, and the broader Deaf community.
- Support communication efforts, including newsletters, digital outreach, and social media initiatives.
- Assist St. Ignatius Catholic Church with broader parish needs as they arise.
- Serve as an ambassador for the Deaf community to the Office of Life, Justice, and Peace (OLJP) and assist with OLJP programs and events.
Position Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field.
- Minimum of three years of experience in ministry and/or working with the Deaf community.
- Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL), with experience interpreting in Catholic or liturgical settings.
- Practicing Roman Catholic with a strong understanding of Catholic teaching and parish life.
- Strong communication, organizational, and collaborative skills.
Work Environment
This position collaborates regularly with parish staff, archdiocesan departments, and the Institute for Evangelization, with a primary focus on serving the Deaf Catholic community.
Pay Rate: $60,000, Annualized
