The Diocese of San Jose is seeking a mission-driven and visionary leader to serve as Senior Director of the Evangelization Department. The Senior Director of the Evangelization Department is instrumental in the Diocese’s missionary transformation, spiritual and ecclesial renewal and in addressing the social and formational needs across the Diocese. The incumbent supports the Bishop’s vision of drawing all to a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and to a more intimate understanding of the Catholic faith, wherever they are on their faith journey.
The incumbent provides strategic direction and leadership of all the established evangelization ministries within the Chancery including but not limited to Faith Formation, Intercultural Ministries, Lay Ministry Formation, Marriage and Family Ministry, Youth and Young Adult Ministry, Liturgy, Life Justice and Peace.
The incumbent will oversee lifelong formation opportunities, provide active and hands-on leadership, and conduct training and presentations as may be necessary to promote an understanding of discipleship throughout the diocesan parish, school faith leadership, and the various ministries across the Diocese. He/She fosters a culture that inspires, equips, grows, and supports disciples who become missionary disciples and disciple-making leaders.
The incumbent will personally lead Evangelization initiatives and projects related to the implementation of the Diocesan Pastoral Plan and lead the development of operational plans. Further, when necessary, the incumbent will assume the responsibilities of any director within the Evangelization Office in case of vacancy/vacancies.
The incumbent reports to the Bishop and is a member of the Cabinet.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING (and other duties as assigned):
Vision, Strategy and Leadership in Evangelization
- In alignment with the Bishop’s vision, develop a strategic plan to grow the DSJ catholic community and to fulfill the mission of the Church of drawing all to a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and a more intimate understanding of the Catholic faith, wherever they are on their faith journey.
- In alignment with the Bishop’s vision, lead the implementation of the Pastoral Plan priorities for ministry:
- Develop operational plans to support and assist parishes in implementation of their key initiatives
- Develop and execute operational plans to implement Diocesan key initiatives
- Provide strategic direction and leadership and ensure the effective execution of plans and programs for all the established evangelization ministries within the Chancery including but not limited to:
- Intercultural Ministries
- Faith Formation
- Lay Leadership Formation
- Adult Spirituality & Family Life Ministry
- Youth Ministry
- Young Adult Ministry
- Worship
- Life, Justice and
- Provide guidance to and collaborate with the following:
- Superintendent of Catholic Schools to promote effective catechesis according to the curriculum approved by the Bishop and to assist with professional development of Catholic school teachers
- The Pastors and all staff and lay leaders of ministries of the parishes to develop and implement the Diocesan Pastoral Plan, and faith formation for lay leaders including their human, spiritual, intellectual, and pastoral needs as missionary disciples of Jesus
- Team and Organization Development
- Coach, develop and support the growth and development of Evangelization team members
- In partnership with the Bishop, the Cabinet, and the COO, lead the review of the organization design (structure, competencies, values, etc) of the Evangelization Department to ensure its effectiveness in the achievement of its goals and objectives.
- Lead and manage change to staffing and roles as necessary to support implementation of the Pastoral Plan
Projects and Other Assignments:
- Lead Evangelization projects as assigned by Bishop such as the partnership with Santa Clara
- Collaborate with the Pastoral Plan Implementation team to support the development and operation of Parish Leadership Teams
- When necessary, assume the responsibilities of any director within the Evangelization Office in case of vacancy/vacancies.
Finances and Operations:
- Responsible for managing and controlling the budget for the Evangelization Department and all underlying
- Work closely with the CFO/COO and with ministry managers to prepare budgets for each
- Collaborate with ministry leaders to set measurable goals for ministry activities and create meaningful reports of outcomes to be regularly communicated to the Bishop and
- Manage staff and resources to maintain an effective pace of work
- Provide assistance to parishes in selecting and hiring
- Develop policies for the Evangelization Office and evaluate them to ensure
- Coordinate program and activity calendar with other Chancery departments and with the
Collaboration and Communication:
- Regularly communicate and implement diocesan vision, guidelines and policies with parish/school
- Works closely with Communications Office to promote Evangelization activities, present resources and information via web page and social media, and engage and identify Evangelization stories, coordinate editorial calendar and share the Good News!
REQUIRED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
- Excellent familiarity with applicable Church documents concerning evangelization and ministry including but not limited to Evangelii Nuntiandi, Evangelii Gaudium, Go and Make Disciples Of All Nations, Disciples Called to Witness, Sacramentum Concilium, and Living as Missionary Disciples.

Education and/or Experience:
- Bachelor’s Degree in pastoral leadership management or nonprofit
- A Master’s Degree in Theology, Education, Pastoral Ministry, or related
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in directing and managing pastoral ministry including knowledge of best practices in evangelization, catechesis, faith formation and organizational
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in leadership, management, and operations in a multicultural organization
- Familiarity with principles and dimensions of adult faith formation, catechist formation, young adult ministry, youth ministry, family life.
- Proven track record in coaching and developing collaborative staff
Leadership Skills:

Salary Range: $135,000–$150,000 annually, depending on experience and qualifications.
