Position Summary
The Director of Religious Education (DRE) provides leadership for the catechetical mission of the parish, overseeing religious education and sacramental preparation for children and youth from early childhood through high school. The DRE ensures faithful transmission of Catholic teaching, effective formation of families, and compliance with diocesan guidelines, while collaborating closely with the Director of Evangelization to support parish-wide spiritual growth.
Primary Responsibilities
Religious Education & Catechesis – Direct and oversee weekly religious education programs for: – Catechesis of the Good Shepherd and/or alternate Pre-K/K program – Elementary Grades 1–5 – Middle School Grades 6–8 – High School Grades 9–12 – Design and implement catechetical programs consistent with USCCB guidelines, diocesan policies, and parish needs. – Establish goals, objectives, and long-range plans for the parish religious education program.
Sacramental Preparation – Direct sacramental preparation programs for: – First Reconciliation – First Eucharist – Confirmation (youth) – Coordinate sacramental catechesis with parish liturgical life and family formation.
Catechists & Volunteers – Recruit, train, support, and supervise catechists and volunteers. – Provide ongoing formation and instructional support for catechists. – Ensure catechists meet diocesan certification, safe environment, and continuing education requirements.
Administration & Communication – Develop and manage the religious education budget. – Select, purchase, and maintain catechetical materials and resources. – Maintain regular communication with parents, students, catechists, and parish leadership. – Evaluate programs and personnel to ensure effectiveness and continuous improvement.
Collaboration – Work closely with the Director of Evangelization to support family catechesis and parish-wide spiritual formation through shared planning, clear communication, and coordinated calendars.
