In September 2020, Catholic Charities returned to its roots and launched a Volunteer Medical Clinic model at the site where it had been operating a medical clinic since 1969. When the clinic first opened in 1969, it was the first of its kind in offering comprehensive free medical care to low-income individuals with no access to quality healthcare. Since then, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act have created greater access to medical care for low-income individuals. However, despite the now 20+ government sponsored safety-net clinics in the region, some patients still do not have access to reliable, professional, affordable medical care. Catholic Charities Volunteer Medical Clinic currently provides healthcare to approximately 1000 patients per year. The Volunteer Medical Clinic VISTA Volunteer will help build the capacity of the clinic by collaborating with the clinic coordinator to ensure that all patients have access to chronic care services. This includes cancer screenings such as mammograms and colorectal cancer screening as well as chronic care services for diabetic patients. The VISTA volunteer will also partner with our pro-bono specialty care network to increase the capacity of patients to access specialty services. Our patient population consists of uninsured adults living in Maryland below 250% FPL. This VISTA position is a part of Catholic Charities USA’s Family Strengthening Program, a national intermediary project. As a member, you will meet virtually with VISTA Leaders and other VISTAs serving throughout the country, all focused on alleviating poverty.
