JOB DESCRIPTION
The University of Dallas invites applications for a one-year Affiliate Assistant Professor of Education position in the Department of Education and Classical Learning to serve in its Education Preparation Program (EPP), with the possibility of renewal for a second year. This visiting faculty role is designed to support the department with high-quality preparation of future K-12 educators. The successful candidate will serve as the department’s literacy specialist and play a critical role in preparing candidates for Texas certification.
The Visiting Affiliate Assistant Professor will teach core literacy courses in the Elementary (EC-6) and other certification programs, with a primary emphasis on the Science of Teaching Reading (STR) exam. This position is essential for ensuring TEA compliance, strong student outcomes on certification exams, and excellence in literacy instruction.
Start date is August 19, 2026.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
· Teach Literacy 1, Literacy 2, and Foundations of ESL (typically 3–4 courses per semester, depending on enrollment and departmental needs).
· Lead preparation of teacher candidates for the Science of Teaching Reading (STR) exam, including embedding STR-aligned content (phonics, phonological awareness, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, diagnosis and correction of reading difficulties, and content-area literacy) across relevant courses.
· Collaborate with Department Chair on curriculum mapping, field-based experiences (FBE), and continuous improvement of literacy components to meet 19 TAC Chapter 228 and Chapter 235 requirements.
· Supervise and support field-based experiences for literacy-related placements.
· Participate in departmental meetings, program assessment, accreditation activities (TEA), and student advising.
· Contribute to a positive, student-centered learning environment that models effective teaching practices and professional ethics.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
· Earned doctorate in Reading/Literacy Education, Curriculum & Instruction with literacy emphasis, or a closely related field.
· Valid or previously valid Texas Teaching Certificate (or equivalent) with demonstrated expertise in literacy instruction.
· Strong record of successful teaching experience in K-12 settings, with deep knowledge of the Science of Teaching Reading content and STR exam preparation.
· Experience teaching undergraduate or graduate literacy methods courses.
· Excellent communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
· Experience with TEA-accredited educator preparation programs and program assessment.
· Familiarity with University of Dallas’s liberal arts tradition and Catholic intellectual heritage.
· Record of scholarly activity or potential in literacy education.
