Job Summary
The PSR (Parish School of Religion) Teacher provides faith formation to children and/or youth enrolled in the parish religious education program. This role helps students deepen their understanding of Catholic doctrine, Sacred Scripture, the sacraments, and Church traditions while fostering a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and encouraging active participation in the life of the Church.
Job Responsibilities
- Teach weekly religion classes for assigned grade level(s) (Kindergarten through 8th grade and/or high school).
- Prepare and deliver engaging lesson plans using the parish- and diocesan-approved curriculum and instructional materials.
- Present Catholic teachings, Scripture, sacraments, prayer, and moral values in an age-appropriate and engaging manner.
- Foster a respectful, welcoming, and faith-filled classroom environment that supports student learning and spiritual growth.
- Lead students in prayer and model Christian values through words and actions.
- Assist in preparing students for the reception of the sacraments, including First Reconciliation, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation, as assigned.
- Maintain accurate attendance records and communicate student progress, concerns, or behavioral issues with the Director of Religious Education (DRE) and parents/guardians as appropriate.
- Ensure compliance with diocesan safe environment policies and child protection requirements.
- Participate in catechist meetings, formation opportunities, required training sessions, retreats, and parish religious education events.
- Support the mission of the parish by promoting Catholic values and encouraging student participation in parish life and liturgical celebrations.
Job Requirements
- Practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church (preferred or required, depending on parish and diocesan policy).
- Knowledge of Catholic doctrine, Scripture, sacraments, and traditions.
- Experience working with children or youth through teaching, tutoring, coaching, or volunteer ministry is preferred.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, volunteers, and parish staff.
- Strong organizational skills and the ability to prepare lessons and manage a classroom effectively.
- Commitment to serving as a positive Christian role model.
